Fairytale Star Trails
Our European adventure took us to Munich, Germany, where after a lively evening (that's putting it mildly) at the Oktoberfest, we struck out for Füssen and fellow astrophotographer Aike Voelker. Our goal was to attempt star trails photos over the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, built by "Mad" King Ludwig of Bavaria, and used as inspiration for the Disney castle. We serendipitously met Aike in line for castle tour tickets, toured the castle, scouted shooting locations, had a relaxed meal in Füssen, and then set up for a few shots in a local farmer's pasture. I had hoped for much longer exposure times, but dew was a major problem (I'm used to very dry air in Colorado, so I don't have any dew heaters). My everlasting thanks to Aike, who not only drove 3.5 hours to Füssen from Frankfurt, but drove us 2 hours back to Munich, then drove another 3 hours home in the wee hours. Now that's a real measure of the fellowship among astrophotographers.
